‘Royal Children’s Hospital Education Institute (2010) Literacy and numeracy in the early years’
The reading I chose for this week is from the Department of Education and Early Childhood development from the Victorian State Government (2010). As suggested in multiple reviews and articles, a lot of work needs to be put into closing the educational gap in relation to technologies; this research paper also states and begins to go through ways in order to help change these matters.
The Four Resources model addresses areas in which people need to reach in order to structure literacy.
- Coding competence
- semantic competence
- programme competence
- critical competence (Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, 2010).
The research paper suggests that the gap in development and/or delay in language and numeric development need to be identified in parents and educators perspectives. From birth, children are learning from their surroundings, though interaction with family and the close community that the child is involved with. Traditionally children have been developing literacy and numeracy skills from paper, but in today’s day, children are quite often learning and reading off of multiple technologies. Numeracy skills are being taken by computer and calculators, creating the answers for the user. A study in Australia showed that 95% of children aged four and five, had access to a computer in their own home.
The Early Years Learning Framework has a big importance of play based learning and the benefits of different play to encourage certain outcomes. The curriculum is to enhance learning giving priority to literacy and numeracy in English and Mathematics.
The paper describes accurately what it means for the twenty first century children’s literacy and numeracy skills entail. The states and territories of Australia are recognising the issues and making sure that the importance of literacy and numeracy skills are kept at a high standard to ensure Australian children are provided with the best learning opportunities.
